Merck Released New Covid-19 Medicine

By: Blake Seliga

On October 1st, Merck announced the release of a pill that they claimed will prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The pill does not take away the virus, but it does prevent the virus from spreading. According to partner, Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, the drug kept patients out of the hospital, and moved the stocks last week.

The main question asked by people is, “How do you know if the medicine works?” Patients with the virus, if they receive the pill early enough, has reduced over 50% of hospitalizations, as well as having an impact on whether patients survive.

Remdesivir, a brand of the pill, has been showing positive results after using for as short as three days, after having a few symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, and sore throat.

The medicine’s safety is very important, especially when it is concerning something as serious as Covid. There is a five day course for the medicine, costing $500.

The trial will only involve patients who are unvaccinated and have tested positive for Covid.
