Ringgold Girls’ Tennis Makes WPIALS

By: Julia Corey

Rebecca McIntosh and Julia Corey of the Ringgold High School Girls’ Tennis Team played together as a doubles team on Wednesday, September 29th at the Doubles Section Tournament at Washington Park and were the first girls in Ringgold tennis history to make it to WPIAL Doubles Championships.

To begin a day full of happiness and accomplishment, McIntosh and Corey were getting prepared to play their first round in sections, when they were told they got an automatic win due to their overall match scores of the season so far.

In the second round of sections, the debating round to determine whether or not they would make it to semi-finals, the Ringgold Girls played Avella High School and won their proset to 10 games.

In the semi finals, McIntosh and Corey fought hard but lost a 3 game set to 6 games a piece against South Park High School. But, that was not the end.

They still had to play a consultation match to finally decide if they would make it to the finals as the 3rd spot. Playing Winchester Thurston, the girls held on and played another tight match to 3 sets in which they had won.

According to Rebecca McIntosh, “I had the goal of making my last year the best year and advancing to WPIALS.”

Rebecca and Julia began playing on the Ringgold Tennis Team as freshmen and were the 8th and 9th players on the lineup, which meant they were barely playing in any matches. Now seniors, the girls have been playing singles in the 1st and 2nd spots of the lineup since they were sophomores.

WPIAL Championships will be played out on Wednesday, October 6th, at Bethel Park High School and McIntosh and Corey will be facing Sewickley Academy in the first round.
